Setting up Mobile Tap with Lightspeed Payments

Mobile Tap requirements

  • iOS 17 or above
  • A Lightspeed Payments account
  • Version 24.2 or higher of Lightspeed Restaurant for iOS

Initial setup

To attach the card reader to the back of your phone:

  1. Stick the adhesive metal plate to the back of the phone, and place the card reader on the plate.
  2. Connect the card reader to a power source using the supplied USB cable.
  3. Let the battery charge for at least an hour and a half before moving on to enabling Mobile Tap.
  • Setting up the Tableside Case for iPhone with Mobile Tap

    The Tableside Case for iPhone is a phone case designed to securely hold the Mobile Tap and your iPhone 12, 13, or 14 in one easy-to-use unit.

    1. Place your iPhone in the case by sliding the phone into the bottom of the case.
    2. Place the case bezel over the iPhone and case bottom, pressing firmly around the edges to ensure the bezel is securely attached.
    3. To attach the Mobile Tap reader, place the reader onto the cut-out on the back of the case. The magnet will secure it in place.

      The Mobile Tap works in two unique orientations. To change the orientation of the Mobile Tap, lift the reader from the magnet and rotate it.

Enabling payments with Mobile Tap

To begin accepting payments with the Mobile Tap reader, this feature must be enabled in your Lightspeed Back Office. 

To enable this payment type in your account:

  1. Navigate to Configurations > Settings > Payment Methods.
  2. Locate the Lightspeed Payments payment method, then click Manage.

  3. Navigate to the Mobile Tap option, then click Activate.

  4. Click Enable
  5. Reload your POS configuration to finalize these changes in your account.

Understanding Mobile Tap settings

Once a payment method has been created, you can configure your settings to change how this payment method behaves.

  • Name: The name of the payment method as it is displayed on the POS and on the consumer receipt.
  • Accounting reference: This code is used for integrating with third-party accounting integrations.
  • Include in floats: When enabled, this payment method is included in float counts.
  • Initiate payment via QR code: Allow customers to pay for transactions using this payment method by scanning a QR code (even if the payment method has been disabled on the POS).
  • Open cash drawer: When enabled, the cash drawer will open when this payment type is selected.

To edit this payment method:

  1. Navigate to Settings > Payment Methods.
  2. Locate the Lightspeed Payments payment method, then click Manage.
  3. Navigate to the Mobile Tap option, then click Edit.
  4. Make your desired changes, then click Save.
  5. Reload your POS configuration to finalize these changes in your account.

Pairing the reader to your POS

  1. Open the Lightspeed Restaurant POS (K) app from your device.
  2. Log in to Lightspeed Restaurant as a POS user with the proper permissions.

    Only managers or users with the User can manage payment terminal settings in the POS permission can complete the next steps. Permissions are able to be managed in the Back Office by user group (most common) or by individual user.

  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Tap Payment terminals.
  5. Tap Set up another card reader to open the Bluetooth pairing screen on your iOS device.
  6. Follow the prompts to pair your Mobile Tap reader to your POS.
  7. Once successfully paired, your reader will appear with the serial number and current battery life.

Taking a payment

Battery charge level

You can check the battery charge level of the Mobile Tap reader on the terminal itself or within the Lightspeed POS app on your mobile device. 

To check the battery charge level on the reader, press the power button on the side of the card reader. Each green LED represents a 25% charge.

Configuring tip options

With Mobile Tap, you can configure tipping to allow for more dynamic options that fit your business needs. Options can be set for custom amounts or predefined tipping options. These settings can be accessed in the back office of Lightspeed Restaurant.

To access your POS tipping options:

  1. Log in to the Back Office with your Lightspeed Restaurant account credentials.
  2. From the navigation menu, select Configuration > Configurations.
  3. Click the name of the Configuration you wish to edit.
  4. Click Payments
  • Enabling custom tip amounts on the POS

    Enabling guest-facing tipping options on the POS will allow your customers to enter tips directly on the screen of the POS. This tip option will also provide customers the option to 'skip' the tipping prompt.

    1. Log in to the Back Office with your Lightspeed Restaurant account credentials. 
    2. From the navigation menu, select Configuration > Configurations
    3. Click the name of the Configuration you wish to edit. 
    4. Click Payments.  
    5. Select Enable guest-facing tipping options for the POS.

  • Enabling predefined tip suggestions

    By selecting Provide predefined tip suggestions, you can configure tip suggestions by either percentage or amount. Suggestions can be set for specific amounts, a percentage of the purchase amount, or a combination of fixed tip amounts and percentages based on the total purchase amount.  

    1. Log in to the Back Office with your Lightspeed Restaurant account credentials. 
    2. From the navigation menu, select Configuration > Configurations
    3. Click the name of the Configuration you wish to edit. 
    4. Click Payments
    5. Select Enable guest-facing tipping options for the POS.

    7. Enter your desired settings.

    8. Click Save

Note: All tip options will provide customers the option to 'skip' the tipping prompt or leave a custom tip amount.

Tip Option Definition 
Percentage This option provides tip suggestions by a percentage of the total order.
Amount This option provides a set dollar amount for the suggested tip.
Percentage or amount based on payment threshold This option allows you to suggest a set amount for orders up to and including a specific amount, and percentages for orders above that amount.

Processing a sale with Mobile Tap

To process a Mobile Tap transaction with your iPhone:

  1. From the Order screen, select all items and discounts to be added to the sale.

  2. Tap the Lightspeed Payments Mobile Tap payment type.
    If tips are enabled, the display will prompt the customer to select a tip.

  3. Tap Pay to prompt the customer to tap their card or contactless payment type to complete the payment.

  4. Once the payment is successfully processed, the approved payment will show on the display.
