Hi. How can we help?

Setting up your Blackbox/Fiscal Data Module (Belgium)

Businesses in Belgium are required to have a Blackbox/Fiscal Data Module (FDM) registered to the Geregistreerd Kassasysteem (GKS). Customers using GKS 1.0 models will have to upgrade after June 30, 2026.

The Blackbox (also known as Fiscal Data Module or FDM) is a fiscal device that signs transactions and orders processed on a cash register system. The Blackbox is only required for businesses from the hotel, restaurant, and catering industry in Belgium that meet specific federal requirements. For more information on who is required to register with a Blackbox device, refer to the official Federale Overheidsdienst Financiën website.

GKS 2.0 models use a Local Access Network (LAN) connection and no longer require a VAT Signing Card (VSC). Once you have confirmed that you have all the required hardware and that all open orders have been finalized in Lightspeed Restaurant, you may begin setting up Blackbox.

Hardware requirements

A Blackbox Blackbox

Cables

An ethernet cable Ethernet cable
A power cable Power cable

When using a Blackbox, an iPad or iPad Pro must be used as the active device for POS. Neither an iPad Mini nor an iPhone can be used as the active device.

Setting up the Blackbox

The Blackbox must have an Internet connection and be connected to the cash register to comply with GKS 2.0 regulations. In an Internet outage, the Blackbox will still be operational and temporarily store transactions on your local storage.

To connect your Blackbox, you must have an Ethernet cable and a router.

  1. Plug one end of the Ethernet cable into the Blackbox.
  2. Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into your router.
  3. Connect the Blackbox to a power outlet.

Configuring settings in Lightspeed Restaurant

To enable the Blackbox integration, you can only have one active device enabled at a time. All other devices must be set to passive. For more information on device settings, visit Editing POS devices.

If you haven't registered with the Federal Public Finance agency, you will need to do so before you can proceed with the Blackbox setup.

Customers already set up with FDM 1.0 will need to confirm their migration to FDM 2.0 in the Back Office before continuing with the setup steps. New customers can directly proceed with setup from the Back Office.
