Tap to Pay on iPhone with Lightspeed Payments

Tap to Pay is only visible on iPhones, and isn't compatible with iPads. For Tap to Pay to function properly, please make sure all device requirements are met.

With Tap to Pay on iPhone, Lightspeed Payments gives you the ability to accept payments directly on your iPhone with no additional hardware required. This feature uses existing contactless payment technology to securely accept Apple Pay, contactless credit and debit cards, and other digital wallets through a quick tap on an iPhone.

Tap to Pay requirements

  • iPhone XR or above
  • iOS 17 or above
  • A 4-digit passcode (or longer) for the device
  • A Lightspeed Payments account
  • Version 24.2 or higher of Lightspeed Restaurant for iOS

Enabling Tap to Pay

Tap to Pay must be enabled in your Lightspeed Back Office before you begin accepting payments.

  1. Log in to the Back Office with your Lightspeed Restaurant account credentials.
  2. Navigate to Configurations > Settings > Payment Methods.
  3. Locate the Lightspeed Payments payment method, then click Manage.

  5. Click Enable.
  6. Reload your POS configuration to finalize these changes in your account.

Understanding Tap to Pay on iPhone settings

Once a payment method has been created, you can configure your settings to change how this payment method behaves.

  • Name: The name of the payment method as it is displayed on the POS and on the consumer receipt. This name cannot be edited.
  • Accounting reference: This code is used for integrating with third-party accounting integrations.
  • Include in floats: When enabled, this payment method is included in float counts.
  • Initiate payment via QR code: Allow customers to pay for transactions using this payment method by scanning a QR code (even if the payment method has been disabled on the POS).
  • Open cash drawer: When enabled, the cash drawer will open when this payment type is selected.

To edit this payment method:

  1. Navigate to Settings > Payment Methods.
  2. Locate the Lightspeed Payments payment method, then click Manage.
  3. Navigate to the Mobile Tap option, then click Edit.
  4. Make your desired changes, then click Save.
  5. Reload your POS configuration to finalize these changes in your account.

Configuring tip options

With Tap to Pay on iPhone, you can configure tipping to allow for more dynamic options that fit your business needs. Options can be set for custom amounts or predefined tipping options. These settings can be accessed in the back office of Lightspeed Restaurant.

To access your POS tipping options:

  1. Log in to the Back Office with your Lightspeed Restaurant account credentials.
  2. From the navigation menu, select Configuration > Configurations.
  3. Click the name of the Configuration you wish to edit.
  4. Click Payments.
  • Enabling custom tip amounts on the POS

    Enabling guest-facing tipping options on the POS will allow your customers to enter tips directly on the screen of the POS. This tip option will also provide customers the option to 'skip' the tipping prompt.

    1. Log in to the Back Office with your Lightspeed Restaurant account credentials.
    2. From the navigation menu, select Configuration > Configurations.
    3. Click the name of the Configuration you wish to edit.
    4. Click Payments.
    5. Select Enable guest-facing tipping options for the POS.
    6. Click Save.
  • Enabling predefined tip suggestions

    By selecting Provide predefined tip suggestions, you can configure tip suggestions by either percentage or amount. Suggestions can be set for specific amounts, a percentage of the purchase amount, or a combination of fixed tip amounts and percentages based on the total purchase amount.

    1. Log in to the Back Office with your Lightspeed Restaurant account credentials.
    2. From the navigation menu, select Configuration > Configurations.
    3. Click the name of the Configuration you wish to edit.
    4. Click Payments.
    5. Select Enable guest-facing tipping options for the POS.
    6. Select Provide predefined tip suggestions.
    7. Enter your desired settings
    8. Click Save.

    All tip options will provide customers the option to 'skip' the tipping prompt or leave a custom tip amount.

    • Percentage: This option provides tip suggestions by a percentage of the total order.
    • Amount: This option provides a set dollar amount for the suggested tip.
    • Percentage or amount based on payment threshold: This option allows you to suggest a set amount for orders up to and including a specific amount, and percentages for orders above that amount.

Processing a sale with Tap to Pay

In Canada, the Tap to Pay limit is $250, and transactions over that limit will not be accepted.

To process a Tap to Pay transaction with your iPhone:

  1. From the Order screen, select all items and discounts to be added to the sale.
  2. Tap Pay.
  3. Tap the Lightspeed Payments Tap to Pay payment type.
  4. On the first Tap to Pay transaction processed through Lightspeed Payments, you will be prompted to link Tap to Pay on iPhone with your Apple ID.
  5. If tips are enabled, the display will prompt the customer to select a tip.

  6. Tap Pay to prompt the customer to tap their card or contactless payment type to complete the payment.
  7. Once the payment is successfully processed, the iPhone will show the approved payment on the display.

All transactions processed through Tap to Pay are available your Lightspeed Payments reports
