In Lightspeed K Series, item categories can be understood as Accounting groups.
Accounting groups are a logical sorting of items into groups. For example, non alcoholic drinks and alcoholic drinks. An accounting group can have several settings which will apply to all items in the group, such as tax attributes (VAT) and production centers. Using production centers as printers, you can specify which printer should print the group's items. By using an organized group structure, you can efficiently manage your items. For example, all drinks can be printed on a printer at the bar.
It’s important to note that accounting groups are not the same as statistic groups. Statistic groups have the purpose to provide a bit more flexibility on reporting than accounting groups, because accounting groups are linked to taxes. With statistic groups you can provide more specific and customized reporting and group accounting groups into these statistic groups. For instance the accounting group’s ‘Alcoholic drinks’ and ‘Non-alcoholic drinks’ are sorted into the statistic group ‘Beverages’.
When accounting groups are added to your Back Office, items must be assigned to them in Menu management > Items. This is mandatory, because the tax on items is defined through accounting groups. See About items for more information on how to assign items to accounting groups. You can get an overview of all items belonging to an accounting group by navigating to Menu management > Accounting groups and selecting Items on the right side of the appropriate accounting group row.
