Modifiers and modifier groups are attached to items to enable customers to make modifications to their order, such as adding or removing toppings. Modifiers can be created in the Back Office via the Item list or created when creating a single item.
Modifiers cannot be used with production instructions.
Creating a modifier
Modifiers are single changes or instructions to add to an item. Create modifiers on their own or as part of single item creation. Modifiers must be assigned to a group to be connected to an item.
- Log in to the Back Office with your Lightspeed Restaurant credentials.
- From the navigation menu, select Menu > Item list.

Click Create and select Modifier.
- Enter the modifier's information.
- Modifier name (required): The name of the modifier, such as Add tomato.
- Accounting group (required): Click to choose an accounting group to assign this modifier to.
- SKU: The modifier's unique identification number. Leave blank to allow the Back Office to automatically generate an SKU.
- Statistics groups: Click Manage statistics groups to assign categories and tags.
- POS button name and color: Enter a POS button name for the modifier and choose its button color.
- Alcohol info: Check Contains alcohol to display a message on the POS that the modifier contains alcohol.
- Click Save.
By default, modifiers have a price of zero. To add a price to a modifier, assign it to a modifier group.
Creating a modifier group
Modifier groups allow you to bundle similar modifiers together when customers normally choose one or more of that type. Modifier groups can be assigned to one or more items, and the customer can choose from the modifiers in that group.
- Log in to the Back Office with your Lightspeed Restaurant credentials.
- From the navigation menu, select Menu > Item list.

Click Create and select Modifier group.
- Enter the modifier group name, such as Extra sauces.
- Enter an SKU. Leave blank to allow the Back Office to automatically generate an SKU.
- Click Add modifier. Enter a modifier name to search for already created modifiers or to create a new one.
- Add a price for each modifier. Toggle on Default to make the modifier a default add-on, which means a customer will need to choose one or more modifier to complete the order.
- Toggle on Selection is required to require customers to choose one or more modifiers, then set a minimum and maximum number of selections.
For the minimum and maximum, you can choose between 1 and 99 selections. - Click Save.
Managing modifiers and modifier groups
Once created, modifiers and modifier groups can be added to items to easily communicate adjustments to orders to the kitchen. They can also be edited and archived from the Back Office.
Editing modifiers
- Log in to the Back Office with your Lightspeed Restaurant credentials.
- From the navigation menu, select Menu > Item list.
- Use the search bar to find a specific modifier or modifier group, or filter by Type > Modifier.
- Click a field to edit it, or click the three-dot menu and select Edit to access more details.
Editing modifier groups
- Log in to the Back Office with your Lightspeed Restaurant credentials.
- From the navigation menu, select Menu > Item list.
- Use the search bar to find a specific modifier or modifier group, or filter by Type > Modifier group.
- Click a field to edit it, or click the three-dot menu and select Edit to access more details.
Adding modifier groups to items
To add a modifier group to an item, create a new item or edit an already-created item. Modifier groups can only be added to single items, not Combos or Groups.
- Log in to the Back Office with your Lightspeed Restaurant credentials.
- From the navigation menu, select Menu > Item list.
- Use the search bar to find a specific item.

In the Details section, click Add modifier group to add an already-created modifier group or Create modifier group to create the group directly.
- If adding an already-created modifier group, check each relevant box, then click Add.
- Click Save.
Removing modifier groups from items
Modifier groups can be removed from their assigned items in the Back Office if they are no longer relevant.
- Log in to the Back Office with your Lightspeed Restaurant credentials.
- From the navigation menu, select Menu > Item list.
- Use the search bar to find a specific item.
- Click the three-dot menu beside the item to access the item's settings.

In Details > Modifier groups, click the three-dot menu beside the modifier group you want to remove and select Remove from group.
- Click Save.
Archiving modifiers and modifier groups
Modifiers and modifier groups cannot be deleted from the Back Office, but they can be archived if you no longer need them.
- Log in to the Back Office with your Lightspeed Restaurant credentials.
- From the navigation menu, select Menu > Item list.
- Use the search bar to find a specific modifier or modifier group, or filter by Type > Modifier/Modifier group.
- Click the three-dot menu and select Archive. This will remove the modifier or modifier group from all menus in all locations.
Using modifiers on the POS
Modifiers are available on the POS when an item with an attached modifier group is selected for an order.
- On the POS, start a new order.
- Tap the button for an item with an attached modifier group.
- On the pop-up screen, tap one or more modifiers to add them to the order.
- (Optional) Tap Duplicate to add a second identical item with the same modifier(s).
- (Optional) Tap Add another item to add this item again with the ability to choose different modifiers.
- Tap Add to ticket.
