Beginning in November 2026 for Quebec-based businesses, customer receipts will automatically show order items and modifiers that you've priced at $0. Lightspeed is making this change to help you comply with local tax and consumer protection laws.
To prepare, review all of your business's zero-priced items and modifiers as soon as possible. Remove or rename any zero-priced items you don't want customers to see, and switch to an alternative method for communicating any notes or instructions to the kitchen.
Identifying zero-priced items
In the Back Office, you can filter the item list to display all of your zero-priced items and modifiers. Once you've identified them, you can decide which to rename or delete.
We recommend deleting any zero-priced items you use to send instructions, notes, or allergens to the kitchen. Lightspeed Restaurant now has dedicated features for these core restaurant functions.
- Log in to the Back Office with your Lightspeed Restaurant credentials.
- From the navigation menu, select Menu > Item list.
- Click All filters.
- Expand the Price structure drop-down menu.
- Enable the checkbox next to No price.
- Click Apply to view all zero-priced items.
Click each zero-priced item or modifier, then change the name to something customer-appropriate or select Archive to remove it entirely. Don't forget to reload all devices to send your updates to the POS.
Alternatives to zero-priced items
If you currently use zero-priced items to communicate with the kitchen, switch to Lightspeed Restaurant's dedicated built-in features instead. These tools keep your internal communication clear and consistent without displaying operational notes on customer receipts:
- Production instructions: Use item production instructions for cooking styles, side options, or allergen alerts.
- Notes: Utilize order, course, seat, or item-level notes for other internal communication.
- Allergens: Use allergens to apply common allergens and communicate dietary needs more consistently during service
