To improve your customer-facing options for suggested tipping, Lightspeed Restaurant has rolled out new features that allow you to customize how suggested tipping is presented.

Enabling Show suggested tips while using older firmware on your terminals will result in those terminals being unable to take any payments. To add this functionality, ensure Show suggested tips is disabled, update your terminals to the latest revision, and then activate the feature as outlined below.

Setting up your suggested tips

Integrated payments option

This applies to Pay at Table transactions as well as POS initiated transactions, including Tap to Pay on iPhone.

1. Log in to the Back Office with your Lightspeed credentials.
2. Navigate to Configuration > Configurations.
3. Click on the Payments tab.
   

   The Enable tipping on terminal when supported or the Allow tipping at payment option must be enabled for suggested tips options to appear. You must also have an active Lightspeed Payments account.

4. Under Tips, enable Show suggested tips. A new series of options are displayed.
   
5. (Optional) If you desire the tip suggestion to be printed on guest receipts, enable Printed receipts.
6. Select Calculate tip on total before taxes.
7. Choose the desired As percentage or As fixed amounts presets.
8. Click Save.

Standalone payments option

Tip suggestions will not be presented on the Payment Terminals using the following procedure. With this option, the terminal would prompt the guest to input a custom tip amount only.

Merchants already using Standalone mode must also disable the Suggested tips option on each Payment terminal.

1. Log in to the Back Office with your Lightspeed credentials.
2. Navigate to Financial Services > Terminals.
3. Click on a terminal to be updated.
4. Navigate to Tipping.
5. Delete each of the three preset options by clicking the trash can icon .
6. Click Save.
7. Repeat steps 3-6 for each terminal.

To display suggested tip options on printed receipts:

1. Log in to the Back Office with your Lightspeed credentials.
2. Navigate to Configuration > Configurations.
3. Click on the Payments tab.
4. Under Tips, enable Show suggested tips.
5. If you desire tip suggestions to be printed on guest receipts, enable Printed receipts.
6. Select Calculate tip on total before taxes.
7. Choose the desired As percentage or As fixed amounts presets.
8. Click Save.

Suggested tip settings

• Show for which payment methods? - All available payment methods are listed. For each method you wish to display suggested tip options, check the associated box. Suggested tip settings for payment terminals can be configured in the Financial Services sidebar option. Payment methods are set up under Configurations > Settings > Payment methods. 
• Include taxes? - Two options are available: Calculate tip on total before taxes or Calculate tip on total after taxes. For standalone transactions (where the customer enters the total directly on the payment terminal), it's not possible to calculate tips based on the pre-tax amount. In such cases, we recommend switching to tip suggestion by fixed amount or disabling suggested tips and using custom tip only.
  

  Some regions require tipping to be calculated on pre-tax amounts. For a full list of regulations, contact your local regulators.

• Include discounts? - Two options are available: Calculate tip on total before discounts or Calculate tip on total after discounts.
• Show suggestions as percentage, amount, or flexible? - You can use this option to control the types of tip suggestions displayed. In each case, the suggested options are configurable in the greyed boxes.
  
  • As percentage displays three options as a percentage of the pre-tax or after-tax total, as configured above.
  • As fixed amounts displays three options as fixed dollar amounts.
  • As amount when below payment threshold displays three suggested percentage options when the bill total is above the set threshold, otherwise three suggested fixed amounts are displayed to the customer.
