Supported hardware

Within this article is a list of recommended hardware to use with Lightspeed Restaurant POS that lets you optimize your workflows and get the most out of Lightspeed's features. This hardware includes tested and supported payment terminals, barcode scanners, cash drawers, network accessories, as well as receipt and kitchen printers. If you would like to set up this hardware yourself, you can follow along with step-by-step instructions by clicking on the relevant links listed beside the piece of hardware you are trying to set up.

Lightspeed only provides support for the hardware listed in this article. If your hardware isn't included in our list of supported hardware, please contact the hardware manufacturer for setup and configuration instructions.

Purchasing hardware

You can purchase supported hardware directly from Lightspeed. Our online stores are customized for each region and only stock items that have been tested and verified by Lightspeed. If you choose to buy your hardware elsewhere, we encourage you to purchase the supported models listed in this article.

Apple devices

Lightspeed Restaurant uses Apple iPads and iPhones to manage customer orders. Ensure your devices meet the requirements below for compatibility.

Minimum iPadOS / iOS version

To install the latest version of the Lightspeed Restaurant POS app, devices must run an official release of iPadOS or iOS 26 or higher. Beta versions of iPadOS and iOS are not supported.

For help updating your OS, see Apple Support.

If you're using Lightspeed Restaurant on a device that cannot run iPadOS or iOS 26, your current setup will continue to work. However, you'll need to upgrade your iPad or iPhone to receive the latest app updates.

We recommend purchasing the newest model for long-term compatibility with future updates, which gives you:

  • New Lightspeed Restaurant app features and bug fixes.
  • Security and reliability improvements from Apple.
  • Greater processing power to keep service moving quickly.

Supported iPads and iPhones

The following iPads and iPhones support iPadOS 26 and iOS 26, respectively. Always use the newest model available for the longest support lifecycle.

iPads

These models support both iPadOS 26 and 27, guaranteeing full compatibility through 2027.

  • iPad: 9th generation, 10th generation, and A16
  • iPad mini: 6th generation and A17 Pro
  • iPad Air (11-inch): 4th and 5th generations, M2, M3, and M4
  • iPad Air (13-inch): M2 and later
  • iPad Pro (11-inch): 2nd generation and later
  • iPad Pro (12.9-inch): 4th generation and later
  • iPad Pro (13-inch): M4 and later

iPadOS 26 is the final update for iPad (8th gen), iPad mini (5th gen), iPad Air (3rd gen), and iPad Pro (11" 1st / 12.9" 3rd gen); none support iPadOS 27.

iPhones

These models support both iOS 26 and 27, guaranteeing full compatibility through 2027.

Supported hardware

Supported hardware refers to devices that have been officially tested and with which the Lightspeed Restaurant app has been designed to work. For these devices, we provide full technical support and software updates to ensure that the devices continue functioning with Lightspeed Restaurant as intended.

Receipt printers

We recommend using printers with a LAN connection to support a sturdy and reliable connection. Should you choose to purchase a Bluetooth or USB printer, be aware that they can only be linked to a single iPad at a time.

Label printers

The Zebra ZD410 is not interchangeable with the Epson TM-L90. The ZD410 prints scannable labels for use with a barcode scanner and is best used for labelling retail or take-home items (such as cakes in tins, bottled sauces, or pre-packaged meals). The TM-L90 prints sticky labels used to identify ordered items and cannot print barcodes or QR codes.

Network hardware

If you choose to manage your own network, be aware that [1] our ability to assist with network issues is more limited and [2] you are responsible for ensuring your network hardware is PCI-compliant and configured to adhere to the PCI DSS.

Kitchen display system

The Lightspeed Kitchen Display System (KDS) shows orders on a separate iPad, replacing kitchen printers and saving paper. It helps track preparation time and lets staff interact with the system to update item statuses.

Order display screen

The Lightspeed Order Display Screen (ODS) shows customers their order status and updates automatically as orders are managed in the Restaurant app or KDS. An Apple TV (4th gen or newer) and a TV or monitor connected via HDMI are required to set up the ODS.

Compatible hardware

Compatible hardware refers to devices that may not have been specifically tested but are expected to work based on our technical specifications. As such, we try to support this hardware as much as possible, but our documentation or support staff may be limited when working with these devices. Compatible hardware may require additional steps, troubleshooting, or assistance from the manufacturer to get them working as expected.

Label printers

The Epson TM-L90 is not interchangeable with the Zebra ZD410. The TM-L90 is exclusively used for printing production dockets, which are adhesive slips that can be attached to ordered items for identification purposes. It cannot print scannable labels with QR codes or barcodes.

Payment terminals and card swipers

Third-party payment processors will provide you with encrypted card readers and payment terminals compatible with their services.

Lightspeed Support can assist with the integration between third-party payment terminals and Lightspeed Restaurant. For troubleshooting issues with the terminal itself, contact your payment service provider.
